The British Red Cross has appointed David Bernstein as the new chair of its board of trustees.

Mr Bernstein, a former chair of the Football Association, Wembley Stadium and Manchester City FC, will take up his new role from 1 January.

A chartered accountant, Mr Bernstein said he was 'honoured' to have been appointed chair of the Red Cross.

He succeeds Lord Allen of Kensington, who was recently appointed to the House of Lords.

Mr Bernstein said: “I am greatly honoured to have been appointed chair of this marvellous organisation, and to have the opportunity of continuing Charles Allen's great work with the board of trustees and senior management team. 

“I look forward to making a meaningful contribution over the coming years.”

Mr Bernstein’s past charitable and voluntary activities include working with disabled supporters via Level Playing Field, the Centre for Access to Football in Europe (CAFE), and with the Prince's Trust on vocational skills. 

He has served on numerous company boards including Pentland Group, French Connection and Carluccio’s.

Mr Bernstein, the incumbent chair of fashion company Ted Baker, is keen on tennis, golf, theatre and has run two London marathons.

Announcing the new appointment, Paul Taylor, vice chair of the British Red Cross, said: “We are delighted to welcome David as our new chair.

“He brings with him a wealth of experience from the commercial, sporting and voluntary sectors, and we are sure he will make a great contribution to our work in the UK and internationally.”
