Since 2014, 6 April marks the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, which presents an opportunity to recognise the role that sport and physical activity plays in communities and in people’s lives across the world.

As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and things begin to slowly open up, the eighth edition of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) celebrates the power of sport to rebuild the world.

Due to its vast reach, unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values, sport is ideally positioned to contribute towards the United Nations’ objectives for development and peace.

To raise awareness of this potential, 6 April was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the UN General Assembly. The adoption of this Day signifies the increasing recognition by the UN of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.

With sporting activities and events being particularly affected by the necessary health measures and restrictions imposed in countries around the world, this global annual event remains a great opportunity to showcase the ways sport has been helping countries, communities build back better.

As part of this global celebration of the power of sport, CAFE would encourage everyone to check out the many ways the Sportanddev community are embracing the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2021.
