News and fans' stories Latest news Belgian and Austrian broadcasters provide audio-descriptive commentary for UEFA EURO 2020 As both Austria and Belgium played their first two games of the UEFA EURO 2020 their performances were not only broadcast to millions across the globe, but two national TV channels have been providing audio-descriptive commentary (ADC) for these fixtures too. ADC is a dedicated service that can greatly enhance the matchday experience of many partially sighted and blind fans. The service can also be enjoyed by differently disabled fans and non-disabled fans, to accompany the match that they are watching. Austrian national broadcaster ORF TV are providing ADC for all matches at UEFA EURO 2020. Commentators are providing the service remotely, which listeners are able to follow via a second audio channel available on ORF TV. The service is being provided by AUDIO2.at, in partnership with ORF TV. Some of the commentators involved have been providing ADC since the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament in Austria and Switzerland, including Gregor Waltl - a long-time friend and partner of CAFE’s and a member of the CAFE ADC Network of expert trainers. Throughout the football season, ORF TV broadcasts live matches of the Austrian Football Bundesliga, the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League, all with dedicated audio-descriptive commentary. In Belgium, national broadcaster RTBF is aiming to make its programmes as accessible as possible by providing ADC for all of the Belgian National Team's matches and the UEFA EURO 2020 Final. This is a first in Belgium, with the national broadcaster citing French channel TF1 as a source of inspiration on their website after they provided ADC for the France vs Ukraine fixture earlier this year, in partnership with the French Football Federation (FFF). Jean-Marc Streel, another member of the CAFE ADC Network, is supporting the service and helping to raise wider awareness of audio-descriptive commentary amongst the mainstream audience in Belgium. CAFE Media and Communications Manager Michael Rice, who leads on our ADC works, said, "It is fantastic to hear that ADC is being made available on a national scale in both Austria and Belgium during UEFA EURO 2020. Major tournaments such as this one can help to create a legacy of improved access and inclusion in the host nations, but it is clearly having an even wider impact and partially sighted and blind people will benefit greatly from the wider availability of ADC". "I must say a huge congratulations to Gregor, Jean-Marc, ORF TV, RTBF and everyone involved in providing this service during UEFA EURO 2020. We aim to continue to raise awareness of ADC across sport and the wider society, and the greater integration that accessible services such as ADC can bring", added Michael.
