A record breaking weekend in Poland?

A record breaking weekend in Poland?

To celebrate the CAFE Week of Action – Total Football, Total Access – in Poland, the country’s largest disabled supporters association is aiming to smash the record number of disabled fans attending the match this weekend.

Klub Kibicow Niepelnosprawnych (KKN) was created in 2008 to represent disabled Slask Wroclaw fans. The group has continued to grow since then, and has organised over 100 trips for disabled fans to follow their team at away matches. They regularly have around 200 disabled fans attending matches, and in 2011 we reported that 230 disabled fans attended Slask Wroclaw’s match against Wisla Krakow. This set a new record in Polish stadiums.

For this weekend’s match in Wroclaw against Lechia Gdansk, KKN is hoping to welcome 1000 disabled fans to Stadion Miejski.

CAFE Managing Director, Joyce Cook OBE, said “When we first started working in Poland in 2009, I was told that only a handful of disabled people were attending live football matches. This is a real indicator of just how far we have all come, and I want to pay a special tribute to Pawel Parus, Michal Fitas, Marek Drabczyk, their fellow disabled fans and the clubs involved for their dedication to helping create a more accessible experience for so many Polish disabled fans. Huge congratulations to everyone involved for making this possible and I feel very sure that we will have a new record to share by the end of the weekend”.

We encourage all disabled fans who can attend the match to be a part of history – this will be a phenomenal achievement and we urge as many disabled fans as possible to get along to the match to join this celebration. We are delighted that this will take place under the umbrella of the CAFE Week of Action in Poland, demonstrating a real legacy of improved access after being a host city during UEFA EURO 2012.

Weronika Paszewska, CAFE’s Project Coordinator in Poland, will be attending the match and next week we will be publishing an interview with several KKN members on the CAFE website.

We wish the very best of luck to everybody at KKN and Slask Wroclaw, and a huge congratulations on this amazing event.
