Please find below biographies some of our confirmed speakers at the CAFE conference 2015.

 

The conference takes place on 30-31 October at the Stade de France, Paris. Experts from around the world are coming together in Paris including representatives from UEFA, FIFA, the ECA, their national associations and clubs, disability and equality NGOs, stadium architects and designers, stadium and safety managers, local organising committees of global sporting events, and fans groups to celebrate Total Football, Total Access.

David Bernstein

David Bernstein

Chairman - CAFE

 

As the former Chairman of Manchester City Football Club, David has vast experience in the business of stadia. Under his leadership the club enjoyed its most successful period in recent years including a move to the City of Manchester Stadium and financial stability. 

 

As a Director of the Wembley National Stadium Board for 5 years, David played an integral role in the successful delivery and opening of the fully accessible stadium and in June 2008 he was appointed Chairman. David became Chairman of the FA in 2011 retiring in 2013. 

 

David is the current Chairman of the British Red Cross, he is also Chairman of Blacks Leisure group plc and Sports Leisure Group Limited and is a Director of Ted Baker plc and Carluccios plc. 

 

David is also President of LPF (Level Playing Field). David was awarded a CBE in the 2014 New Year Honours.

Emmanuelle Assmann

Emmanuelle Assmann

President - French Paralympic Committee

 

Emmanuelle Assmann is the President of the French National Paralympic Committee and the Secretary General of the French Disabled Sports Federation (FFH).

 

Emmanuelle is also a decorated disabled athlete, winning a Paralympic Games bronze medal (in team) in wheelchair fencing at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. In addition, Emmanuelle was the European vice-champion in the 2005 individual event, and won a gold medal (Epée) at the 2005 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

 

Earlier this year Emmanuelle was awarded the Chevalier Legion d’Honneur – one of the highest honours available in France – in recognition of her achievements.

Joyce Cook

Joyce Cook

Managing Director - CAFE

 

Joyce is the founding and Managing Director of CAFE and is herself a well-travelled disabled football fan. She is also Chair of Level Playing Field a charity that campaigns for disabled sports fans in the UK. Joyce is also a member of the Football Association's Inclusivity Advisory Board.

 

Joyce was a member of the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority's Built Environment Access Panel and a consultant to LOCOG. She was a member of the FA's Disability Equality Advisory Group and is an expert advisor to EPAS, the Council of Europe and its Disability Committees on Sport and Women and Girls and other governmental bodies and sits on various diversity and access groups. Joyce is also active in the wider equality arena as a board member at FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) and a Director of Women in Football, a UK network of professional women working in and around the football industry who support and champion their peers and aim to improve women's representation at all levels of the game. She is an expert on accessible stadia and the built environment for sporting events and continues to provide specialist advice to UEFA and FIFA and is the author of the UEFA and CAFE Good Practice Guide – Access for All.

 

Joyce has been a guest speaker at disability and equality seminars across Europe talking about access and inclusion to sports stadia and the challenges still faced by many disabled people. Joyce was awarded an OBE in the 2012 Queen’s new year honours for services to disabled football supporters in the United Kingdom. Joyce is based in the CAFE offices in London, UK, and oversees the day-to-day running of the charity.

Irina Bernstein

Irina Bernstein

Director - CAFE

 

Irina is an in-house lawyer at the London South Bank University and deals with a wide range of commercial, governance and student issues.

 

Previously, she worked in private practice and qualified as an employment solicitor. Irina is of Ukrainian origin and is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian and German.

 

She has been providing support to CAFE since its formation and focuses in particular on CAFE’s Eastern European initiatives.

Neil Beecroft

Sustainability Manager - UEFA

 

Neil Beecroft is the operational project leader responsible for pragmatically implementing sustainability within UEFA EURO 2016 to reduce its environmental impact and to integrate a social dimension into such event, notably the Access for All initiative in collaboration with CAFE and UEFA Football Social Responsibility (FSR).

Mauana Simas

Mauana Simas

Project Coordinator, FWC 2014 project - Urece

 

Mauana Simas is a Brazilian journalist based in Rio de Janeiro. Since 2009, Mauana has been working with accessible media, especially on television.

 

During the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Mauana coordinated the audio descriptive commentary project delivered by CAFE and Urece in 4 host cities. She works as the Communication Coordinator for Urece, and is also a co-founder of Nós Todos Filmes, a film-producer company that adapts audiovisual content for disabled people.

 

In 2013, Nós Todos Filmes won the Shell Live Wire prize of youth entrepreneurship. Mauana continues to work to improve accessibility for partially sighted and blind people, and was named as one of ThinkOlga.com's Inspirational Women of 2014.

Cathy Long

Cathy Long

Head of Supporter Services - Premier League

 

Cathy Long is Head of Supporter Services at the Premier League. After she had spent a number of years campaigning on behalf of football fans, the PL asked her to join them and improve matters from the inside. She is responsible for a wide range of projects covering stadium and fan issues and is passionate about improving accessibility. Her recent work includes establishing the VisitFootball project, a comprehensive assessment programme that is transforming the match day and ticket-buying experience for all fans. She has written about football for a number of publications, co-edited a book on Liverpool FC and its role in the city (Passing Rhythms, pub. 2000.)  and contributed to various other books on football and its fans, including The Miracle of Istanbul, published in 2005.

Derek Wilson

Architect - wilsonowensowens

 

wilsonowensowens (WOO) was created by Derek Wilson and Kevin Owens following the completion of their combined role in leading the design of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) at London 2012.

 

WOO bring an extensive knowledge base with over 25 years of designing and delivering sports venues around the world. Working together on such iconic projects as the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, London 2012 Basketball Arena, and most recently Bath Rugby Stadium.

 

Derek Wilson, Director WOO, has over 25 years post qualification experience, including 15 as a company director with Lobb, HOK Sport and DWA. Derek has experienced projects at all stages and run projects from concept to completion. His portfolio of stadia is wide reaching from Huddersfield Stadium, to Croke Park in Dublin, through to Emirates Stadium. Derek lead the design of London’s 2012 Olympic Bid, and was subsequently LOCOG Head of Design. He is also a Board Member of the Sports Ground Safety Authority (formerly Football Licensing Authority)

Kevin Owens

Architect - wilsonowensowens

 

Kevin Owens trained and practiced in architecture prior to his role as Design Principal with London 2012. As a Fulbright Scholar, his education at Yale formed the platform for his career within a multi discipline design field. His career has included a wide range of design projects from sports buildings through to urban design. Previous projects have included; The Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles, Kensington Oval Cricket Ground Barbados, and Cambridge University Sports Centre. In his central role as Design Principal for London 2012, Kevin lead on the design of the built environment, and provided strategic direction on the design and overlay of all venues.

 

The team are currently working on a wide variety of design commissions ranging from leading the overlay planning for the Rugby World Cup in 2015, UEFA European Football Championships 2020 to the development of two new stadia in the UK, strategic events bids, planning through to the design of permanent built sport facilities.

Patrick Gasser

Patrick Gasser

Senior FSR Manager - UEFA

 

Patrick Gasser heads UEFA’s Football and Social Responsibility (FSR) Unit. He joined UEFA in 1999, when he began working in the National Associations Division, supporting football development in Eastern Europe.

 

Before coming to UEFA, Patrick worked for thirteen years at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), both in the field and in the Human Resources Department at the headquarters in Geneva. He worked in areas affected by conflict in Africa, Asia and Europe where he had a broad range of responsibilities that included directing relief and protection operations and managing media contacts.

 

Patrick graduated from the School of Economics and Business Administration in Lucerne and also earned a post-graduate degree in Human Resources there. He earned a certificate in Human Resources Management from the University of Geneva and a diploma in Sociology, Politics and Management of Sports from the University of Lausanne and a diploma of Advanced Studies in Corporate Social Responsibility at the University of Geneva, class of 2010.

Kathryn Albany-Ward

Kathryn Albany-Ward

Founder - Colour Blind Awareness

 

Following a successful career in retail property development, Kathryn Albany-Ward founded Colour Blind Awareness in 2009 after her son was diagnosed with deuteranopia. She was dismayed to discover that there was no formal advice available to support her son and the 450,000 other colour blind school children in the UK. Having successfully launched the www.colourblindawarenesss.org website, she now promotes the interests of colour blind people everywhere by providing training to schools, advising businesses in how to become colour blind compliant, writing articles, giving interviews and providing advice and support to colour blind people and their families.

Wendy Morrell

Wendy Morrell

Independent Disability Advisor - London Metropolitan Police; Assistance Dog Access Advisor

 

Wendy Morrell is a passionate disability access advocate. She was first partnered with an assistance dog in 2000, some eleven years after sustaining a severe traumatic brain injury, neck and facial injuries in a sporting accident. Having previously been both an active participant and keen sports fan it was only natural that Wendy wanted to enjoy the freedom and independence given to her by her assistance dog and attend sporting events once again. Thwarted by access refusals due to her assistance dog; Wendy became determined to change public perceptions of the value and abilities of assistance dogs, and the vital roles they play in people’s lives.

 

In 2005 Wendy published a pan European survey on Access and Customs pertaining to Assistance Dog Partners, in 2006 she won a scholarship to travel to assistance dog conferences in San Diego, and became the European Vice President of an Assistance Dog Partner organisation for three years. About the same time, she was appointed as a member of The Disabled Person’s Transport Advisory Committee in the UK and this brought her into contact with the organisers of London 2012. Wendy subsequently Chaired a stakeholder group for assistance dog partners advising London 2012, and has become a regular speaker at assistance dog conferences held in the UK, Europe and United States, and was an Olympic Torchbearer accompanied by her dog, for the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics.

 

Wendy has been an Independent Disability Advisor to the Metropolitan Police in London, since early 2011, with a keen interest in sporting events, crowd control, demonstrations, and incidents involving dogs. She currently advises two UK assistance dog charities on access matters, and runs an active stakeholder group of assistance dog partners in the UK.

Indrek Petersoo

Development and PR Manager - Levadia Tallinn

 

Indrek Petersoo has been working as the press officer and club development manager of FC Levadia Tallinn for 13 years. Indrek is a graduate of Tallinn University.

 

As a TV producer, Indrek is also keen on media work on the other side of the screen as he is one of the commentators of the local Viasat Sport Baltic channel covering UEFA Champions League and Premier League matches.

 

Indrek also has a ten years experience from mobile industry as he has been working as a contractor previously for Ericsson and currently for Netsize, a Gemalto company, mainly focused on mobile payments and innovative messaging solutions.

Stephanie Gadd

Stephanie Gadd

Chief Executive - Level Playing Field

 

Stephanie is the Chief Executive of Level Playing Field (LPF) in England and Wales. She is responsible for the day to day running of the organisation, liaising with key partners as well as ensuring the access agenda is never far from the spotlight.

 

Stephanie has previously worked for various sporting organisations including The Football Association, UEFA, LOCOG, Kent FA and most recently at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014. She has a wealth of experience in project management, football development and international events management as well as managing high profile campaigns such as The FA Respect programme.

 

LPF was established in 1998 and is the only national registered organisation for England and Wales representing disabled fans of all sports, together with their companions and advocates. LPF’s key objectives are to be a voice for all disabled fans; to promote an inclusive agenda and ensure an equality of experiences for all fans; to enable more disabled people to attend live football and other sporting events; to raise disability and access awareness through football and other sports and to utilise the unique voice of football to raise awareness and improve the situation more widely across society.

Volker Sieger

Volker Sieger

Vice President - BBAG (Federal Association of Disabled Football Fans); Scientific Director - Institute for Barrier Free Design and Mobility (IbGM)

 

Volker is the Scientific Director of the Institute for Barrier Free Design and Mobility (IbGM) in Germany. Volker has been the vice-Chairman of the Federal Association of Disabled Football Fans (BBAG) in Germany since 1999.

 

Volker is an expert in the field of accessibility to buildings and transport, and represents both the IbGM and the German Disability Council in several standardisation bodies and accessibility working groups on national and European level. BBAG is an umbrella organisation which brings together disabled and non-disabled football fans, and disability access officers of the clubs.

 

Among other things, Volker has been involved in the developing of the first guide for accessible stadia in Germany, published by German Bundesliga (DFL) in 2009.
