In Belgium, I recently met up with Geert Thomas who is head of : RSCA Purple Wheels a fans group at R.S.C. Anderlecht. This disabled fans club was formed 2 years ago and already has a strong membership. : RSCA Purple Wheels is well organised and works closely with the football club on all matters for disabled fans and to continue to improve access.
Wheelchair users were originally positioned at one corner of the stadium only with a pitch level view and a limited amount of spaces. Behind one goal there was a sterile area which was used for advertising and covered by a giant flag. Geert and his group approached the club and their sponsors to ask them to reduce the size of the flag to allow a new platform with an unrestricted view to be put in place for wheelchair users. This was agreed and allowed the number of places to be increased to 18 wheelchair users + 18 seats for personal assistants or family or up to a maximum of 36 additional stadium seats depending on the required configuration.
Later that day I visited the stadium and saw for myself the new area. I also met with Pierre Desmet the club’s community manager and Jean-Pierre Kindermans the manager for the stadium tours department.
In the below picture taken at the stadium (from left to right) I am joined by Pierre, Geert & Jean-Pierre
